An item designed to be deployed from a ship for testing the accuracy of shipboard or airborne sonar systems. When depolyed in the water it hangs from a flotation device (buoy) which is equipped with a radar reflector. When interrogared by a pulse transmitted from a shipboard or airborne sonar, the transponder replies with an acoustic signal. Simultaneous range and azimuth measurements made by precision fire control radar aboard the interrogating platform provide accurate references for comparison with measurements taken from the interrogating sonar system.
