A liquid used to lubricate and cool cutting tools in the machining of metals. It usually consists of mineral or fatty oils, mixtures thereof, or emulsifiable oils. It may contain additives, such as sulfur, chlorine or phosphorus compounds, emulsions composed of a mixture of oil, emulsifiers and water, colloidal suspensions of surfactants, wetting agents and rust inhibitors, or aqueous solutions composed of surfactants, nitrites salts, and organic amines.
