Steel rule; plain head
An instrument consisting of a hardened steel base (head) and a rule (or rod) which slides through the base. It is used to measure or determine the depth of holes, slots, and grooves, and if the base is graduated in degrees and the rule is adjustable, to duplicate angles and chamfers.
